“The State calls Alexander Conway to the stand.”

Alex Conway looked scared to death. In his early sixties, he wore his thick gray hair generously parted to the side. Thankfully, Kenya made sure he put on his suit coat. I’d seen him out in the hallway and he’d already sweat through his dress shirt.

Great.

This was supposed to be easy. Twenty minutes before, I’d lost my temper in the hallway when Kenya told me Judge Saul wasn’t going to budge from her ridiculous pretrial ruling on the parking lot security footage. She was making me introduce the actual VHS tape rather than a digital copy. So now, I had the unenviable task of rolling in an ancient, clunky TV/VCR combo on wheels. I drew a few raised brows and snickers from the jury as I got ready to handle one of my so-called star witnesses.

“Mr. Conway,” I said. “Can you tell me what you do for a living?”

“Um. I’m the security manager for Sentinel Security Systems.”

“And how long have you held that position?”

“Well, I’m the general manager now. I’ve done that for fourteen years. Before that I was an on-site security manager. I had that job for six years, I think it was. Before that I was a security guard for Sentinel. Did that for almost a year before getting into management. Before that, I was a Lucas County sheriff’s deputy. Ten years before I had to go on disability. I hurt my back.”

“I’m sorry to hear that,” I said.

“Don’t be. Sentinel pays much better and there’s a lot less administrative crap.”

Conway’s face went white. He looked at Judge Saul.

“Sorry, ma’am.”

“Indeed,” she said.

“Mr. Conway,” I refocused him. “Let me take you back to April of 2000. Where specifically were you working?”

“That’s when I was an on-site manager. I was assigned to the Sunmeadow Court office buildings.”

“Do you recall what shift?” I asked.

“I was always second shift in those days. I’d come in at two o’clock and I’d work until midnight. Four days a week.”

“Do you recall whether you worked April 14th, 2000?”

“I do.”

“How can you be so sure you worked a date over twenty years ago?”

“Well, that was the weekend Ms. Denise Silvers got attacked. I remember because obviously the police had to investigate so I was questioned. Multiple times.”

“Did you know Ms. Silvers?” I asked.

“She looked familiar,” he said. “I mean, I knew she was one of the girls who worked in the building. You know. Just from seeing her coming and going. And sometimes I’d still walk rounds. Depending on the time of day ... I had two guards working under me in the building at that time. One manned the entrance to the parking structure. The other would walk the grounds, check on the different offices, be ready to respond if there was ever a security issue.”

“And what were your duties?”

“I supervised them. Made sure all the safety checks were being made. I reviewed the security tapes at the end of every day.”

“Security tapes. There were cameras?”

“There were,” he said.
